Hook: How do people fool themselves into thinking they are more mature spiritually than they really are?

Book: The failure of the five virgins to be prepared in this parable illustrates a lack of genuine faith in Jesus. They possessed the religious forms (lamps) but not the necessary faith. (Oil is often a metaphor for the Holy Spirit.) The other five virgins were prepared for the bridegroom’s return because they took him at his word and responded with faithfulness and obedience, as believers should to Jesus. Self-deception only feels good until reality hits.
