Hook: Can you remember a time when you were surprised by a conflict with someone you had known most of your life?

Book: Jesus was not only rejected but almost killed by people in His hometown. They were excited about His miraculous abilities and His teaching until He applied the Scriptures to them. To justify themselves, they were even willing to destroy one of their own.

Even the people closest to you will resist spiritual truth. Since they think the message is for others and not for them, they attack the messenger who dares to try. Jesus came to His own and His own received him not. They wanted His glory but were not willing to submit to His message. His preaching exposed their jealousy, disobedience, and anger.
